Chris Rhodes, Hotel Mermaid Club

21.09.22–27.11.22

Webber Gallery will present ‘Hotel Mermaid Club’ in September, a photographic exhibition by British artist Chris Rhodes. The exhibition features 60 images and was conceived in London in 2019 before being presented for the first time in Milan in collaboration with Fondazione Sozzani.

Hotel Mermaid Club is a series of still-life photographs focusing on the “self-made landscapes” that unseen individuals create within their own culture and environment. Although there are no portraits in the traditional sense, the project derives its humanity from its storytelling, the spaces people inhabit, and everyday objects so commonplace that they often escape our notice: a bus seat, a towel, a coat hanger, a tomato.

Immersed in everyday life, fleeting moments are given a second glance. It is an opportunity to appreciate simple habits, small imperfections, and accidental aesthetics. Through attention to form, structure, and subtle detail, daily life is occasionally interrupted by contrasting colours, primary shapes, and delicate compositions that coexist within Hotel Mermaid Club, a body of work born from extensive international travels across eight countries over the last seven years.
